Debutant watch: How England new-boys fared against Germany

After a credible goalless draw with the world champions at Wembley, how did England’s debutants fare?

Gareth Southgate named three uncapped players in the starting line-up with a further two came off the bench at Wembley and, with places still up for grabs at next summer’s World Cup in Russia, this was a chance for some to stake a claim for a place on the plane

Here, we look at how each new England international fared on their first outing for the senior side.

The Everton goalkeeper is enduring a torrid time at his club but despite the Toffees languishing win the Premier League his performances have been good enough to earn his maiden cap.

The 23-year-old was soon in action, bursting from his line to prevent Timo Werner latching onto a poor Harry Maguire backpass in the opening minute.

Made his first decent stop as he pushed a Werner shot away from goal at the midpoint of the first-half and again prevented the the RB Leipzig forward opening the scoring with a similar save.

Was largely untested in the second half but was calm and assured when in possession.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek
Like Pickford, Loftus-Cheek has impressed in a struggling side this season and has been a rare highlight of Crystal Palace’s woeful start to the campaign.

The Chelsea loanee could have been on the scoresheet early on but Kieran Trippier opted to shoot from an acute angle rather than square the ball to his compatriot, who was free in front of the German goal.

He settled his nerves with a cheeky nutmeg on Marcel Halstenberg and played a delightful pass to Jamie Vardy on his way to becoming one of the classiest players on the pitch.

Tammy Abraham
Another Chelsea loan star given his England debut by Southgate.

The newcomers were awarded their ceremonial first caps by Ian Wright but the former Arsenal striker would have buried an early chance that fell Abraham’s way, with the Swansea loanee unable to make contact with a low cross from Jamie Vardy from England’s first attack.

He looked lively and saw a first-half effort deflected behind for a corner before being muscled out of a header on the stroke of half-time.

The rangy striker was industrious without proving he belongs at this level and was replaced my Marcus Rashford on the hour.

Joe Gomez
The Liverpool defender came on earlier than he would have anticipated as he replaced the injured Phil Jones with less than 25 minutes on the clock.

Gomez was deployed on the left-hand side of Southgate’s back three and, despite picking up a caution before the break, settled in well to life at this level.

Jack Cork
The Burnley midfielder replaced the industrious Jake Livermore for the closing stages but had little time to stamp his authority on the game and will be hopeful of more minutes in Tuesday’s friendly against Brazil.
