Protesters accuse NPA of secret recruitment

There was drama in Kano on Thursday as some young men, under the aegis of the Young Pharmacists Group, stormed a hotel named Tahir Guest Palace on Ibrahim Natsugune Road where a secret interview for job placement was being conducted by officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

Applicants, who were mostly children of the affluent in the society, massed at the AbdulAzeez Yari Conference hall of hotel for the exercise, which was coordinated by NPA’s Human Resource Manager, Bukar Yahaya.

It was also learned that the Kano secret recruitment was sequel to a similar exercise conducted secretly in the North-East in September.

But the Young Pharmacists Group led by its Chairman, Lukman Bashir, protested the exclusion of his members in the exercise.

He said, “We got information of secret recruitment by NPA in Kano after a similar exercise in the North-East, and we stormed this place to ascertain from the Human Resource Manager why pharmacists are left out.”

Bashir appealed to the Federal Government to wade into the matter and make it open to all professionals, irrespective of background.

“I want to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to halt this glaring injustice against less-privileged Nigerians by making it open to qualified candidates,” he said.

NPA’s Human Resource Manager, Bukar Yahaya, when contacted over the exercise, said, “I’m a civil servant, I don’t have the authority to speak to the press
